The puzzle, known as Number Place in the US, was first published in New York in the late 1970s by the puzzle publisher Dell in its magazine Math Problems and Logic Puzzles. It became immensely popular in the UK in 2005, stimulating international interest. What is its popular name which is also the Japanese for ‘single number’?

wrong question...it is called as sudoku even in the US...no one calls it as number place anymore
